Durankulak is a small village near to the border with Romania. It is well known thanks to the presence of one of the best ornithological sites in Bulgaria - Durankulak Lake. This is one of the sites, where in hard winters almost entire world population of the Globally Endangered Red-breasted Goose winters. The lake is a Ramsar site, BirdLife International Important Bird Area, proposed by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds as NATURA 2000 site.
