The town of Kyustendil is situated in the Kyustendil’s Plain in South- Western Bulgaria. Its average altitude is 482 m. above the sea level and it is surrounded by Osogovo Mountain to the South-West and Konyavo Mountain to the North-East.
The distance between Kyustendil and the capital Sofia is only 87 km. The busiest and the shortest road connecting Kyustendil and Sofia is 871 highway, passing through the towns of Radomir and Pernik. If you enter Bulgaria from Macedonia on the Skopie-Sofia E 871 highway, you will pass through the border checkpoint in Gueshevo, only 19 km from Kyustendil.
Built on the site of the ancient town of Pautalia, Kustendil is one of the most famous Bulgarian spa resorts. The climate is traditionally continental with Mediterranean influence. The mild weather is largely due to the beneficial effect of the mountains which surround the plain from the north, east and west. The average annual temperature is 11C; and the average July temperature, 21.6C. The annual duration of sunshine is 2,200 hours on the average , and the relative air humidity, 68 per cent.
The mineral waters of the numerous fountains (natural springs and wells) have an almost uniform chemical composition, temperature and sulphide content (71-73C; 9.4-11.3 mg oxidable sulphur compounds estimated in terms of hydrogen sulphide). The waters are clear , colourless, with a pleasant taste and a slight smell of hydrogen sulphide.
